FIELD: organic chemistry and technology. SUBSTANCE: invention proposes a method of synthesis of 1,10-, 1,7- and 4,7-phenanthrolines by condensation of ortho-, meta- and para-phenylenediamines with glycerol in solution of 70% sulfuric acid in the presence of catalyst. Catalyst consists of iodine-containing compound (KJ, ) and cerium (IV) sulfate at molar ratio 0.005-0.005-0.01, at 180-190 C for 8-10 h followed by reaction mass passing through column filled with aluminium oxide. The yield of process is 75-80%. Synthesized compounds are used in analytical and organic chemistry as indicators of redox reactions.
