FIELD: organic chemistry. SUBSTANCE: monochlorosubstituted adamantane or diamantane derivatives are prepared by catalytic chlorination of corresponding initial compounds at 150-250 C. Chlorination is carried out using chloroform in the presence of catalyst selected from group consisting of for 6 hours at adamantane (diamantant) to catalyst to chloroform molar ratios of 100:1:1000. EFFECT: catalyst consumption is reduced, number of by-products becomes fewer, and process technology is simplified. 1 tbl
