FIELD: physicochemical mechanics of friction, evaluation and prediction of tribotechnical properties of lubricants at stage of laboratory tests. SUBSTANCE: evaluation of strength of lubricants is carried out by value of energy of chemical bonds of major valences in their molecules which is equated to activation energy of destruction of lubricants and is determined as difference of activation energy of destruction of surface of metal sample clean and modified by friction. For determination of activation energy of surface destruction there is used method of microscratches realized with help of Vickers microhardness tester. Results of usage of given method makes it possible to evaluate value of energy of thermal-mechanical destruction of lubricant during operational friction and to characterize carrying capacity of lubricating layer. EFFECT: evaluation of capability of lubricant to maintain its operational characteristics at specified level. 1 tbl
