FIELD: production of aluminum by electrolysis of aluminum oxides in melt. SUBSTANCE: carbon-containing paste for use as elements of electrolyzers in the form of monolith or pressed for formation of anodes, cathodes and lining of electrolyzers designed for electrolysis of aluminum oxide to produce aluminum consists of compacted mixture of one or more carbon-containing materials with noncarbon noncontaminating binding material and one or several fillers, mainly, aluminum oxide and aluminum. Binding agent is used in the form of suspension of one or more colloids, for instance, colloid silicon dioxide, aluminum oxide, yttrium oxide, cerium oxide, thorium oxide, zirconium dioxide, magnesium oxide, lithium oxide, or it is produced from one or several colloid predecessors or colloid reagents not obligatory with one or more chelating agents. The electrolyzer elements are made by molding paste to obtain the preset shape and size, for instance, in mold, press mold or on electrolyzer bottom. Paste is pressed and dried for their use. Paste may be used as such in anode of Soderberg type or for binding together of carbon blocks similar to packing paste. EFFECT: higher efficiency. 54 cl, 1 dwg
