FIELD: production of aluminum by electrolysis of alumina dissolved in melt of fluoride containing electrolyte, particularly cell and method for producing aluminum.
SUBSTANCE: cell for electrochemical production of aluminum includes horizontal carbon cathode bottom having surface coating wetted by aluminum and row of plates made of latticed porous material wetted by aluminum, usually of foamed material filled with aluminum and placed onto aluminum-wetted surface coating. At operation thin bottom layer of aluminum wets said surface coating of upper part of cathode bottom and lower part of porous plates filled with aluminum. Upper aluminum layer with thickness in range 5 - 100 mm is formed onto porous plates filled with aluminum. Cell may operate with metallic anodes, possibly protected by means of cerium oxyfluoride coating for working at temperature higher than 910 - 930°C.
EFFECT: enhanced efficiency, increased useful life period of cell, high quality of aluminum due to lowered degree of its contamination.
