FIELD: underwater acoustics. SUBSTANCE: laser radiation with circular distribution of energy density over beam section and partially absorbed by aqueous medium is used to form acoustic line through which acoustic waves from examined object reach sound detector. Specific feature of process lies in the fact that energy density W J/sq.m2 is set across section of laser beam in agreement of mathematical relation , where T≅75 deg is temperature at which inversion of sound velocity in water with temperature takes place, deg; Cp is heat capacity of water under constant pressure, J/kgρ -deg; p is water density, kg/cu.m3; μ - is absorption factor of laser radiation by water, (m-1).
