FIELD: chemistry of polymers. SUBSTANCE: claimed process comprises branching α-olefins by contacting said olefins with peroxide compound containing activated unsaturated group at above 120 C. The claimed process is carried out in nitrogen atmosphere or in molten form in oxygen-containing atmosphere. α-olefin is treated according to the claimed process to produce substantially branched polymer with average molecular weight higher than that of the initial polymer. EFFECT: more efficient modification process. 8 cl, 8 ex, 8 tbl
