FIELD: nuclear power engineering. SUBSTANCE: spent nuclear fuel in the form of non-disassembled fuel assemblies is placed in separate thermit-holding containers; wells with special zones or with members of inclined or horizontal sections are filled with containers. The latter are ignited in definite space-time depending sequence to ensure safe formation of compact metal of Cr, N, Fe with density of 7.0 g/cu.cm at about 2000 C in deep geological structures; compact metal is immersed in less dense and easily melting enclosing rock; temperature of compact metal is permanently maintained above melting point of rock due to energy of radioactive decay of spent nuclear fuel components. EFFECT: reduced cost and time of process, improved safety and disposal capabilities of spent nuclear fuel. 5 cl, 2 dwg
