FIELD: biochemistry and pharmacology. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to cytochrome c used in medicine as antihypoxic drug to normalize tissue respiration in patients with viral hepatitis, asphyxia, pneumonia, asthmatic conditions, ischemic heart disease, intoxications, senile retina degeneration, and bodily overloading. Method involves extracting preparation from homogenized farm animal hearts with 0.2-0.5% of sulfuric acid solution at pH 4.0-4.5 followed by neutralizing extract with calcium or barium hydroxide solution. Filtered extract solution is chromatographed on macroporous cationite column at pH 8-9 allowing cytochrome c and myoglobin to be separated, the latter being unable to be sorbed on column charge under conditions employed. Myoglobin is collected separately to be used as valuable iron-containing additive. Ballast proteins are precipitated by adding 90-120 g/l of sodium chloride. EFFECT: reduced cytochrome c isolation time and increased its yield. 2 ex
