FIELD: catalysts in organic synthesis. SUBSTANCE: catalyst suitable for reaction of phenol with carbonyl compound to produce bisphenols is provided, which is especially suitable for phenol-acetone condensation reaction to produce bisphenol A. Catalyst is distinguished by having 10-30 sulfonic groups bound to C1-C7-alkylmercaptoamine through ionic ammonium sulfonate linkage and having porous structure with microporous surface and spatial lattices with transfer passages, which consists of principal lattices with passages having pore size 9•103-38•103 nm in nonswelled state and branch lattices with passages having pore size 20-150 nm, pore size to pass through microporous surface being 5-20 nm. Transfer capacity of one pore of microporous passage 5-20 nm in size comes to more than 50% of total transfer capacity of the pores of microporous surface, while ratio of transfer capacity of one pore of microporous surface to that of one pore of the surface of transfer-destined spatial lattice is equal to (0.25-1.1):1. Method of preparing above-defined catalyst based on ion-exchange resin containing sulfonated styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer with specified porous structure is described.
