FIELD: sorbents and oil pollution control. SUBSTANCE: sorbent is intended for collecting spilt petroleum and petroleum products from water reservoir surface and also for localizing spilt petroleum, including burning petroleum. Oxidized graphite is preliminarily mixed with iron, cobalt, or nickel compound in organic liquid to confer magnetoactive properties on sorbent. Once uniform distribution of metal compounds in bulk of mixture achieved, organic liquid is separated, solid phase dried to loose state and then thermally expanded at 900-1300 C. Iron compounds are advantageously of oxide type, in particular, magnetite. Cobalt and nickel compounds can be used together with iron compounds or separately. Oxidized graphite can be nixed with magnetite powder to iron content from 1.5 to 35% (on conversion to metal). Relevant organic liquids are gasoline, acetone, diesel fuel or gas concentrate but other liquids may also be of use. EFFECT: magnetically active sorbent prepared. 4 cl, 2 tbl
