FIELD: testing technology. SUBSTANCE: invention is meant for study of dielectric strength of high-voltage plants. Corona-forming discharge with formation of bulk discharge close to corona- forming electrode which then is uniformly redistributed along discharge gap by way of drop of current of corona-forming discharge is initiated by supply of initial voltage to electrodes of discharge gap. Pulse pedestal of voltage ensuring complete break-down of gas dielectric in sum with initial voltage is then formed in supply circuit. Drop of current of corona-forming discharge and formation of pulse pedestal are carried out with the help of auxiliary dynamic discharge whose electrodes are spaced apart from closed to open state till they are flashed over by arc.
