FIELD: refractory materials. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to refractory materials that can be used in steel-smelting assemblies and especially in assemblies for refining smelting of high-melting nonferrous and precious metals. Paste contains free lime and hydrophobic binder consisting of tallow oil and plasticizer, in particular, calcium hydroxide. Amount of tallow oil is calculated from formula: x 100 where AN is acid number of tallow oil, S specific surface of CaO powder, m/g, and n is number of monomolecular layers on calcium oxide surface. Required amount of calcium hydroxide is calculated from relationship: m2= 7,5/S1/6. Preparation: initial free lime-containing powder heated to temperature up to 150 C receives specified amount of tallow oil, mixture is agitated at cooling to temperature at least 117 C for at least 2 hr, specified amount of calcium hydroxide is added, and mixture is agitated until homogeneous state at room temperature is attained.
