FIELD: bridge-building industry. SUBSTANCE: this can be used in building of overpasses and bridges for motor roads and railways. Bridge abutment has means for taking horizontal load from ground which is made in the form of strutting wall, also means for taking load from span structure which contains supports located equidistantly from face side of strutting wall and carrying span structure through head-piece of abutment. Also provided is adapter plate having its one end located on upper wall of abutment head-piece, and having its other end resting on crushed-stone pad. Strutting wall of means for taking horizontal load is made in the form of horizontally located fortifying interlayers made of geotextile material alternating with layers of compacted ground. Face side of strutting wall is at angle of 8-10 deg. to vertical line and it is formed by end-faces of compacted ground layers which are embraced from bottom upwards by flexible ends of corresponding fortifying interlayers clamped between upper-lying fortifying interlayer and next layer of compacted ground. Ratio of length of fortifying interlayer located at base of strutting wall to height of strutting wall is 0.6-1. End of adapter plate with crushed-stone pad is located on upper layer of fortifying interlayer of strutting wall. Application of aforesaid embodiment of bridge abutment allows for saving materials in construction, reduction of cost and acceleration of building tempo together with ensuring higher stability and operational reliability of structure.
