FIELD: ferrous metallurgy, namely elimination of surface defects of metallic ingots. SUBSTANCE: method for cleaning ingot surface comprises steps of immersing hot ingot rotating around vertical axis into cast iron melt with constant carbon content (4.2-4.7)% at temperature 1320 C - 1480 C provided due to use of carbon containing burden; removing ingot from melt after soaking at rotating it in opposite direction; at cleaning process saturating ingot surface with carbon from melt and refreshing contact surface of rotating ingot by washing out fused layer. EFFECT: enhanced quality of ready product, possibility of performing cleaning process at lower temperature. 1 dwg
