FIELD: detection of counterfeit money and the like. SUBSTANCE: for detecting counterfeit entities use is made of means for irradiating entity under test with ultraviolet rays, detector that functions to detect light reflected from mentioned entity at first wavelength in first frequency band and fluorescent light from mentioned entity at second wavelength in second frequency band differing from first frequency band; mentioned second frequency band includes wavelengths in which counterfeit entities may fluoresce when exposed to mentioned ultraviolet light and standard level of light from irradiating means; use is also made of means for taking decision if mentioned entity is counterfeit and for adequate display; the latter means responds to detected reflected light and detected fluorescent light; it incorporates device for comparing output measurement signal with signal of detected standard level of light. Detector is arranged so that standard level of light does not actually depend on if entity under test is present or not. EFFECT: improved accuracy of detection. 18 cl, 10 dwg
