FIELD: petrochemical synthesis. SUBSTANCE: benzene containing, as impurities, sulfur compounds is hydrogenated at elevated temperatures and pressures (140-180 C and 0.1-2.0 MPa) in presence of catalysts disposed in two zones. In the first one, with regard to process cycle direction, there is copper- containing catalyst placed and, in the second, nickel-chromium catalyst at their volume ratio (30-50):(70-50), respectively. Preferably, high sulfur-capacity copper-chromium-zinc-aluminum catalyst or copper-zinc cement-containing catalyst and also nickel- chromium or nickel-aluminum catalyst are used. EFFECT: simplified process, optimized process parameters, and improved environmental condition. 4 cl, 4 tbl, 4 ex
