FIELD: fire-fighting equipment, in particular, fire suppression by gas-aerosol mixture. SUBSTANCE: method involves introducing gas-aerosol mixture into volume to be protected, with mixture being generated in the process of burning of pyrotechnic composition, with further catalytic oxidation of incompletely burnt products; providing further catalytic oxidation on surfaces of substances selected in group of aluminosilicates, at maximum temperature zone until complete burning of pyrotechnic composition with predetermined composition of gaseous phase and temperature patterns. Produced gas-aerosol mixture is cooled by interaction with substances possessing high heat absorption, with composition and size filtering being simultaneously effectuated. Apparatus has casing with outlet opening, combustion chamber positioned within casing and thermally insulated from casing walls, and ignition initiating device. Additional oxidation unit has two grids. Space between grids is filled with catalytically active aluminosilicate, such as zeolite. Apparatus is further provided with cooling unit. Additional oxidation unit is positioned in combustion chamber above pyrotechnical mixture and may be repositioned by repositioning device so as to provide arrangement of this unit in maximum temperature zone. EFFECT: increased efficiency by reduced toxicity and temperature of fire-suppressing mixture supplied into volume to be protected from fire. 10 cl, 8 dwg, 1 tbl
