FIELD: chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: described is method of selective methylation of toluene to form para-xylene by reacting toluene with methyl halide in the presence of zeolite catalyst. Reaction is carried out at temperature ranging from 300 to 400 C and pressure from 100 to 1000 kPa (from 1 to 10 atm) and said zeolite catalyst is essentially unmodified zeolite catalyst selective in form, in protonized form and having Si/Al ratio of at least 25 or less than 50 and comprising 0.5-25 wt % of said acid, heteropolyacid being selected from 12-tungstenophosphoric acid, 12-tungstenosilicic acid and 12-molybdenophosphoric acid.
