FIELD: power engineering. SUBSTANCE: overhead line handling voltages over 100 kV has overhead phase conductors attached to supporting structures and spaced apart at fixation points through distances large enough to avoid contact between them. Each conductor is covered with insulation that has external layer of weather-resistant material, such as cross-stitched polyethylene doped with carbon soot, and internal layer of semiconducting plastic.
