FIELD: computer engineering. SUBSTANCE: method involves measuring disk drive idle time and detection of duration longer than given threshold, decreasing rotation speed of spindle motor drive down to minimal operation or less without stopping disk by movement of head to track closest to external periphery. Spindle control unit should decrease rotation speed of motor but keep constant linear speed thus reducing power consumption. Minimal working level is equal to rotation speed at which head can read and write data. EFFECT: decreased power consumption without deterioration of response time for data search without need to remove disk from disk drive. 8 cl, 6 dwg
