FIELD: methods of extraction of mercury from solid industrial wastes by the oxidation with iodine or bromide. SUBSTANCE: invention proposes highly volatile organic solvents as medium for dissolving iodine and bromide. The solvents may also dissolve products of oxidation reaction such as mercury iodides and bromides. The method consists in mixing of wastes with extracting composition, separation of extract after mixing for 40-60 min at temperature of 18-22 C and separation of combined mercury from extract by evaporation of solvent, or by passing of extract through layer of activated carbon. Introduction of additional reagents for the mercury salts is excluded. EFFECT: simplified and intensified process. 2 cl, 2 ex
