FIELD: manufacture of magnesia-silicate refractory materials. SUBSTANCE: melted forsterite-containing material comprises, wt %: forsterite, 35-97; periclase, 1-55, and glass phase, 2- 10, size of forsterite crystals in the form of prisms being as least 100 mcm. Said material preferably has the following grain composition, wt % 3-1 mm fractions, 20- 60; 1-0 mm fractions, 20-45; less than 0.063 mm fractions, 20-35. In order to prepare slag-resistant refractory materials, said melted forsterite containing material is used. Said forsterite containing material comprises, wt %: said melted forsterite-containing material, 70-95 and carbon 5-30 present in refractory material as defined in claim 3. Refractory material as defined in claim 4 comprises, wt %: said melted forsterite-containing material, 10-60; periclase- containing material, 10-85 and carbon, 5-30. Refractory material as defined in claim 5 comprises, wt %; said melted material, 10-60; periclase-containing material, 25-89 and chromite, 1-15. EFFECT: increased slag resistance of refractory materials due to presence of prismatic forsterite crystals whish are of considerably larger size, presence of glass phase, increased sintering and packing of refractory materials and presence of carbon, periclase and chromite additives. 6 cl, 16 ex, 1 tbl
