FIELD: chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: described is method of preparing nitromethane from chloroacetic acid derivatives, alkali agent and sodium nitrate in aqueous medium at elevated temperature. Chloracetic acid is used in free form, and alkali agent is used in amount sufficient to adjust pH of medium at 6-8 (preferably 7.5), and process is carried out at conditions of constant distillation of the resulting nitromethane in the for of azetrope with water. EFFECT: increased yield of the desired product.
