FIELD: non-ferrous metallurgy; methods of preparation of magnesium and its alloys in open furnaces. SUBSTANCE: proposed method includes melting of charge in shielding medium atmosphere, refining and modifying the melt by purging it with Freon-13 or Freon-14 gas. Refining and modifying are performed through filtration chamber - porous base of open reservoir immersed in melt ready for casting. Repeated modifying of melt is performed by purging with Freon-13 or Freon-14 gas at delivery of shielding gas to surface of melt. Porous base of filtration chamber consists of layers of magnesite and synthetic corundum scrap at ratio of 1:1. Rate of filtration ranges from 7.0 to 8.0 cm/s. Finished melt is held for 15 minutes and is cast in molds. EFFECT: possibility of preparation of alloys at high degree of cleaning from nonmetallic inclusions at considerable reduction of consumption of shielding gas (from 800 1 per melting cycle to 400-500 1). 2 cl
