FIELD: engineering environmental control; applicable in processing of industrial wastes (mainly, acetylene production) containing calcium carbide into sorbent for binding of ecologically hazardous substances. SUBSTANCE: method consists in preparation of mixture by mixing wastes with thermic composition and fusible additive in the form of alkali metal halide with weight ratio of wastes, fusible additive and thermic composition of 1:(1.0-2.5): (1-4) with subsequent pressing of mixture and its burning under conditions of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis. Under optimal conditions the method provides for yield of carbon from wastes in excess of 30% with specific volume of mesopores in designed product amounting to 0.22 cu.cm/g and micropore volume of 0.17 cu.cm/g.
