FIELD: nuclear power engineering. SUBSTANCE: method is meant for handling radioactive wastes held in cooling ponds in the form of aqueous solutions and slurries of bottoms. Content of radionuclides in bottoms is a few orders of magnitude higher than in water phase of cooling pond. Bottoms are noted for high mobility, they are easy to become turbid, to flow over, and to extrude during conservation of cooling ponds by filling them up with slag. Conservation of cooling ponds is aimed at reliable immobilization of radioactive bottoms in cooling pond by filling them up with slag without stirring at water-to-binder ratio of at least 2; slag is milled before filling to specific surface area of 4000-6000 sq. cm/g. Slag fill-up is at least 2.5 cm high and its rate of filling is 0.125-0.375 sq. m/h.
