FIELD: chemical modification of rubbers, more particularly preparation of chlorobutyl rubber. SUBSTANCE: method comprises using hypochlorous acid esters such as dimethylvinyl or dimethylphenyl carbinol as chlorinating agent. During chemical modification of butyl rubber, there occurs no considerable change of molecular weight of polymer nor evolution of hydrogen chloride.
