FIELD: nuclear engineering; charged-particle accelerators. SUBSTANCE: target assembly receiving pulse drive beam is arranged in axial channel of vertical channel structure (blanket) with vertical fuel channels optimally spaced apart in hexagonal lattice assemblies; heavy water is used as coolant, moderator, and radiator; the latter accommodates set of dry experimental channels, including vacuum channel, having large diameter d (d = D/2 - D, where D is core diameter); device also incorporates means for continuous monitoring of subcritical blanket and emergency safety system responding to signal indicating specified margin of subcriticality. Device ensures higher efficiency (neutron-flux-to-particle- current ratio of driver beam) and quality (neutron-flux-to-core-power ratio). EFFECT: enlarged functional capabilities. 3 dwg, 1 tbl
