FIELD: reactor physics and engineering; monitoring subcritical assemblies and ensuring their safety. SUBSTANCE: method implies more comprehensive analysis of response pulse of thermal neutrons from blanket of electronuclear plant incorporating pulse driver and construction of curve showing response pulse leading edge waveform (rise time) as function of blanket reactivity, that is degree of subcriticality. Method includes fast measurement of response pulse rise triggered from amplifier-driver flip-flop. Subcriticality margin or its absence is determined in on-line mode by rise time of response pulse within time interval shorter than 1 ms and signal is generated for protection and diagnostic systems.
