FIELD: nuclear physics; neutron sources for nuclear studies and transmutation of radioactive wastes. SUBSTANCE: target assembly is made in the form of wheel vertically mounted in evacuated casing and provided with horizontal pipes for feeding charged-particle beams which are positioned at certain angle to wheel surface. Wheel is toothed and engaged with gear of actuator that functions to transmit rotary motion to vacuum and is arranged diametrically to charged-particle beam feeding pipes. Annular beam- absorbing members are attached to both sides of wheel on its periphery. Disk-shaped displacer with taper bulge in central part is disposed inside wheel. Displacer functions as neutron moderator and absorber and distributes coolant flow. The latter is supplied through channels of inserts installed in carrier-wheel shaft hollows and through coolant inlet/outlet assemblies. Inclination angle of pipes and thickness of beam absorbing members are chosen so that charged particles are fully absorbed by member material. Structural members are made of materials featuring minimal section of neutron activation.
