FIELD: ferrous metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: making stainless steels, including high-grade steels containing nickel and chromium nickel is performed in melting unit provided with at least two wells for steel pouring unit. Portion of material consists of solid and/or molten charge containing metallic, scrap in particular and partially carriers of alloy containing carbon is molten in first well. Upon attaining temperature of 1460 C, melt is decarburized by blowing with oxygen or oxygen mixtures till content of carbon is less than 0.3%, after which melt is heated to pouring temperature of 1620 to 1720 C and the following reductants are added to molten slag: ferrosilicon, silicon or aluminum. Then, final content of carbon less than 0.1% is achieved. Simultaneously with decarburizing of material in first well, melting of second portion of material is effected in second well.
