FIELD: equipment diagnosing Diesel engines. SUBSTANCE: invention makes it feasible to evaluate residual life of Diesel engine without considerable expenditure of time and labor under conditions of its running, during maintenance or routine repair. Value tk of running of Diesel engine from start of operation or from overhaul is recorded and smoke density Nt of exhaust gases of Diesel engine corresponding to recorded running is measured at maximum no-load speed of engine or under condition of maximum power at rated speed of rotation of crankshaft or under condition of free acceleration. Specific consumption qt of fuel by Diesel engine for moment of test is found by value of measured smoke density with use of dependence qt= K(Nt-Nн)+qн, where K is coefficient depending on type of Diesel engine and conditions of its running; Nt is measured smoke density of exhaust gases; Nн is rated value of smoke density of exhaust gases; qн is rated value of specific consumption of fuel. Value tres of residual life of Diesel engine is determined by dependence where qп is limit value of specific consumption of fuel; a is index of power of function.
