FIELD: mechanical engineering. SUBSTANCE: method and assembly are used in manufacture of piston engines. Operating surface is formed by cutting-in of wave pattern into internal surface performed by at least one cutting tool provided with curvilinear cutting edge. Difference of levels between crests and troughs of waves in pattern is at least 0.005 mm. Then crests of waves are removed by plastic compression to at least 0.004 mm of their height with formation of flat areas so that wave trough bottom after compression is on level which is 0.001 mm lower than the above-indicated areas. In longitudinal section internal surface of manufactured line is partially wave. Wave troughs on this surface are separated by flat areas. Cylinder liner for large two-stroke cross-head engine, for example, has operating surface for piston rings on its internal surface. Cylinder liner internal diameter is within 25-100 cm and its length is within 100-400 cm. Use of plastic compression for forming of liner operating surface reduces time required for manufacture of liner. EFFECT: improved quality of liner. 16 cl, 5 dwg, 4 ex
