FIELD: gas-discharge engineering; ac gas-panel displays such as those in color television modules. SUBSTANCE: pixels include first, second, third, and fourth display electrodes; first and second electrodes are spaced apart through distance d1, second and third ones, through distance d2, which is shorter than distance d3 between third and fourth display electrodes. Control process involves following procedures: in processing mode common record pulses are applied to first and second or second and third display electrodes; in addressing mode scanning pulses are supplied to off-numbered display electrode used in processing mode; in display mode discharge maintenance pulses are sent to fourth electrode and to display electrode which were not used in addressing mode. Pulses shaped across display electrodes not used in addressing mode are similar in amplitude and polarity. EFFECT: improved reliability of control due to reduced control voltages. 6 cl, 8 dwg
