SUBSTANCE: each pixel has four display electrodes; distance l1 between middle display electrodes is shorter than distances l2 and l3 between each of . middle electrodes and closest extreme ones; l2 may equal l3 and l2 may be shorter than distance l3 between closest edges of adjacent extreme electrodes of two adjacent pixels. Panel control is effected by feeding general write pulses to middle display electrodes during warm-up period, control pulses, to control electrodes and to middle display electrode most distant from extreme display electrode during addressing mode, and discharge maintenance pulses, to same middle display electrode and to extreme display electrodes during display mode, initially to extreme display electrode closest to this middle one.
