FIELD: flame retardants. SUBSTANCE: complex metal hydroxides depicted by general formula Mg1-x-yZnxNiy(OH)2, wherein x=0.003- 0.1 and y=0.01-0.05, are prepared in the form of homogeneous solid solutions by heating complex metal hydroxides with general formula Mg1-x-yZnx(OH)2, wherein x=0.003-0.1, and adding water-soluble nickel compound solution. Starting hydroxide in turn is prepared by reaction of magnesium-containing aqueous solution (X), in which concentration of magnesium varies from 0.01 to 1 M and which also contains water-soluble zinc compound, with alkaline material (Y) in equivalent reaction proportion X/Y from 1:1.01 to 1:1.20. Resulting solid solutions are characterized by homogeneous distribution of metals. Their crystalline structure can be controlled in order to limit secondary aggregation process. When introduced into a high-molecular compound, complex metal hydroxide of invention exhibits high flame- retardation property and excellent mechanical strength. EFFECT: increased choice of effective flame retardants for polymer materials. 5 cl, 6 tbl, 15 ex
