FIELD: preparation of activated carbon, more particularly purification of water and gas media from toxic impurities. SUBSTANCE: described is method of preparing activated carbon which comprises mixing finely dispersed carbon-containing stock with binder, pressing granules, carbonizing and activating thereof. Carbon- containing stock is essentially mixture of semicoke and low-ash coal at 1:0.20-0.40 ratio, and binder is mixture of coal and resins having 18-20% of coke. Carbonization of granules is carried out to bulk density of 600-640 g/cubic dm at 800-1000 C, and activation is carried out to total pore volume of 0.85-1.00 cubic cm/g.
