FIELD: chemical power sources. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to carbon fluoride used as active material of cathode of high-capacity lithium chemical power sources. According to invention, in carbon fluoride consisting of carbon and bound and adsorbed fluorine, which reflects formula (CFx)n, adsorbed fluorine is contained in amount 0.002-0.009 wt %. Carbon fluoride is prepared by heat treatment of carbon material powder in reaction zone of reactor with gas mixture containing fluorination agent and inert gas at volume ratio (2-15):(85-98). Fluorination agent is represented by anode gas obtained from electrolysis of acid potassium fluoride. Heat treatment is carried out at 350-520 C for 6 to 50 h. Carbon mixture powder under treatment is continuously or periodically stirred both in reaction zone of reactor and beyond this zone. Ratio of material being treated to volume of reaction zone varies from 0.01 to 0.06 and summary volume of gaseous carbon f, varies from 0.01 to 0.06 and summary volume of gaseous carbon fluorides in the reaction zone outlet is maintained at the level of 3-7 vol %.
