SUBSTANCE: invention describes CdS-photocatalyst for producing hydrogen of the following formula: m(A)/Cd[M(B)]S where m means alloying element as an acceptor of electrons taken among the group including Pt, Ru, Ir, Co, Rh, Pd, Ni and oxides of these metals; A means mass percent content of m in the range 0.10-2.50; M means catalytic element taken among the group including V, Cr, Al and P; and B means M/(M + Cd) in mole percent in the range 0.05-20.00. Invention describes also preparing the photocatalyst and method of producing hydrogen using its. EFFECT: increased yield of hydrogen, unlimited working time of catalyst. 12 cl, 1 tbl
