FIELD: chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: catalyst for preparation of carbon from carbon dioxide contains cobalt or nickel as main component and alkali metal such as potassium as additive. Catalyst is brought into contact with carbon-containing gas, for example with carbon dioxide. When cobalt and potassium are used in catalyst, reaction is carried out at 350 to 550 C, and, when nickel and potassium, at 400 to 610 C. Reaction gas can also contain hydrogen.
