FIELD: underwater acoustics. SUBSTANCE: invention can be employed to detect underwater objects under conditions when use of traditional active and passive methods of detection is hampered or impossible because of high level of sea noise. Salient feature of invention lies in placement of series of hydroacoustic detectors which directivity characteristics are oriented towards surface of water area on bed of defended sea water area. As hydroacoustic noise radiation of water surface of defended sea water area is directed vertically downwards hydroacoustic detectors will have constant level of noise signal. Arrival of underwater object in defended water area will lead to screening of some detectors by hull of object which makes it feasible to detect the latter by change of level of noise signal of water surface across outputs of proper detectors which is technical result of invention. Employment of said way is especially effective during gale and ( or ) precipitation on defended sea water area.
