FIELD: chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: thermochemical of carbon material having optionally open porosity is intended to form, by means of activated cementation, heat-resistant carbide coating on surface and inside of said material, provided it is porous. Also described is use of special cementing alloys for thermochemical treatment of carbon materials having optionally open porosity in halogen-containing atmosphere. Activated cementation is carried out at reduced pressure using, on the one hand, element E (transferred and reacting with carbon of material to form desired carbide alloyed with element M, and on the other hand, halide (chloride, fluoride, preferably fluoride) of said slightly volatile element M present in solid form. Coatings prepared by claimed method make carbon materials highly resistant against oxidation, wear and corrosion. EFFECT: improved thermochemical treatment of porous carbon material. 12 cl, 5 ex
