FIELD: chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: method comprises contacting formaldehyde with hydrogen fluoride in liquid or vapor phase at elevated temperature in the presence of catalyst to form product comprising bis (fluoromethyl) ether and water, separating at least some water from bis (fluoromethyl) ether. Process comprises feeding bis(fluoromethyl)ether and less than equimolar amount of water to reaction zone containing catalyst. As result, high yield of difluoroethane is attained and yield of by-products is decreased. EFFECT: more efficient preparation method. 10 cl, 22 tbl
