FIELD: nonferrous metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: in a thermal magnesium method for spongy titanium production, which can be used in a process of magnesium reduction of titanium tetrachloride, including maintaining temperature of outside apparatus wall by the aid of regulator using power input variations provided by turning on and off heaters in heating zones and by cooling reaction zone wherein titanium tetrachloride is subjected to magnesium reduction, novelty consists in that on time-to-off time ratio in heater for each of apparatus zones during the process is maintained no higher than 3.2. This restriction allows power consumption to be reduced by 300-359 kW per 1 t spongy titanium. EFFECT: reduced power consumption due to transferring heat from reaction zone to heating zone of reaction apparatus. 1 dwg, 1 tbl
