FIELD: power metallurgy, more particularly preparation of protective coatings. SUBSTANCE: blend is prepared from tungsten-containing stock, sodium carbonate and silicon dioxide at 1.0: 0.45:0.17 ratio and heated to 1400-1450 C. Lower layer of melting product, namely sodium tungstate is separated and charged into hermetically sealed graphite container at sodium tungstate to container ratio of 1:10-20 by volume. Sodium tungstate is decomposed at 1225 C in inert gas atmosphere for 1-2 h. Tungsten carbide yield is 96.7-97.6%. Method is simple and efficient. EFFECT: more efficient preparation method. 1 ex, 1 tbl
