FIELD: optical technology. SUBSTANCE: invention refers to technology of manufacture of optical waveguides, namely, light-conducting channels. It can be employed to design optical processors for computers, optical amplifiers and/or generators for fiber-optical communication and to produce elements of three-dimensional memory. Process includes conversion of optical properties of material of preform by irradiation. In this case beams of accelerated particles are used for irradiation and clear material of preform is transformed into opaque or less clear. Irradiation is conducted through mask or by movement of beam of particles or by movement of preform relative to beam. Electrons, protons, ions of helium, atoms of hydrogen or helium are utilized in the capacity of accelerated particles. Polyatomic compounds of metals and/or semiconductors with oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, fluorine are used as material of preform. EFFECT: simplified technology, reduced loss of luminous flux transmitted over waveguides, expanded spectral range, diminished dimensions, raised density and elimination of limitations in configuration of created pattern. 15 cl, 1 dwg, 3 tbl
