FIELD: crude oil treatment. SUBSTANCE: process includes following stages: (i) addition to oil feedstock of catalytic agent containing oil-soluble or oil-dispersible compound of metal selected from VB, VIB, VIIB, and VIII group metals, concentration of metal in oil feedstock being at least 5 ppm; (ii) heating of oil feedstock with catalytic agent in reactor at 400 to 800°F, and hydrogen pressure 15 to 1000 psig; (iii) blowing of reactor contents with hydrogen-containing gas with gas intake sufficient to maintain total water-carbon dioxide pressure below approximately 345 kPa.
