FIELD: oil producing industry. SUBSTANCE: invention deals with methods of reduction of oil stock total acid number whose value is associated with a number of carboxylic acids, especially, naphthenic acids present in oil. Method includes stages of addition to said oil stock of catalytic agent containing dissolved or dispersed in oil compound of metal selected from group including metals of VB, VIB, VIIB, VIII groups of periodic table where amount of metal in oil stock amounts at least to about 5 ppm. Said oil stock is heated with said catalytic agent in reactor at temperature, approximately from 400 to 800 F (approximately from 204.44 to 426.67 C) and pressure from close to atmospheric one, approximately to 1000 psog (approximately 6993.33 kPa) with hydrogen practically absent. Reactor containing said oil stock and catalytic agent is blown with inert gas to maintain partial pressure of water and carbon dioxide within less than approximately 50 psia (344.75 kPa). EFFECT: higher efficiency. 10 cl, 1 dwg, 2 tbl, 1 dwg
