SUBSTANCE: communication system #7 has signal processor designed for processing its messages to select virtual connections of asynchronous transmission mode and to generate control messages pointing to selected virtual connections of asynchronous transmission mode. Signal processor has computer system, data structures, initiating procedure logic, and termination procedure logic. Data structure includes table of backbone links, table of group of backbone links, table of exclusions, table of automatic number identification, table of called numbers, and routing table. Initiating procedure logic and termination procedure logic are stored in computer system and function to process signal message data related to initiating line and to termination line; they also provide for data structure access to request virtual termination connection of asynchronous transmission mode in response to request from initiating procedure.
